Coaching

Hope and Healing Coach

As a behavior transformation coach at Hopeandhealingcoach.com, I help people quit unwanted habits, such as hair pulling, skin picking, stress eating, and more. Through my coaching program, Hack Your Habit: Your Guide To Freedom From Unwanted Habits, I teach strategies to any (and yes, I mean any!) unwanted behavior. This program includes a combination of one-on-one coaching sessions and between-session messaging to guide clients through my signature process to break free from the frustration and shame that's been holding them back. At the end of the program, clients walk away with a highly personalized Breakthrough Blueprint that walks them step-by-step through effective behavior change. Learn more here:

Treatments

Treatment Guidelines from BFRB.org

Treatment Overview

Expert Consensus Treatment Guidelines (in depth)

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • CBT is the most effective treatment for BFRBs we have at this time
  • 2 types of CBT -  Habit Reversal Training (HRT) and the Comprehensive Behavioral Model (ComB) - are especially helpful for treating BRRBs
  • You can learn more by reading the book Overcoming Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (see above)
  • More on therapy from BFRB.org

N-acetylcysteine (NAC)

  • Shown in Jon Grant’s study to help about 50 % of people with trich
  • You can buy over the counter without a prescription (but check with your doctor before starting any new medication or supplement)
  • Typical recommendations are to start with 600 mg once or twice daily and slowly (each week) titrate until effective up to 1,200 mg three times daily (3,600 mg/day)
  • Be patient - benefits may take up to 2-3 months to notice

Other treatments that may be helpful for trich

The following medications or supplements may be helpful, but studies are very limited or have inconsistent results:

  • SSRIs (fluoxetine/Prozac, escitalopram/Lexapro, sertraline/Zoloft, etc.)
  • naltrexone
  • Atypical antipsychotics (olanzapine/Zyprexa, aripiprazole/Abilify)
  • Inositol
  • lithium carbonate
  • bupropion HCl
