Wearing a wig: styling human hair wigs

Many people want to know- “How do I curl my wig?” Below I’ll show you how to get those gorgeous curls back in your human hair wig, just like how it arrived to you!!

How to curl a human hair wig

The basics

Temperature: Most human hair wigs can safely tolerate heat styling up to 350 degrees, so make sure you have a curling iron with that tells you the actual temperature rather than an arbitrary number.

Wig stand: it also helps to have a wig stand to style your hair on. Sure, you can put it on your head to style it, too, but that takes away one of the great things about wearing a wig - that you can style it right in front of you Instead of behind you

Heat protectant: Be sure to apply a heat protectant before you get started to reduce damage to your hair form the heat. Wigs are expensive - take the extra time and money to protect them! My favorite is Nourished by Tiffani Miracle Detangler.

Finish it with oil: Finsih off the look and make your hair extra-soft with smoothing oil. My favorite is Nourished by Tiffani Smoothing Oil.

The Method

If your head is smaller than your wig stand, undo the adjustable straps at the nape so avoid stretching out your wig. Then place it on the wig stand and attach it with T-pins if needed. Spray the wig with a few sprays of heat protectant and run your fingers or a comb through the hair to help distribute the product. Let the heat protectant dry before you start heat styling.

I like to start by dividing the wig into halves or thirds from top to bottom. Just clip the higher hair out of the way and you’ll get to it later.

I like to curl my wig using 1/2 to 1 inch sections that are not too wide vertically, but this may be differnt for you depending on the look you’re going for. Bigger sections of hair will have bigger, looser curls and smaller sections will have smaller, tighter curls. The barrel size of your curling iron, temperature sitting, and how long you leave the hair in the curling iron will also change how the curl ends up. You can also choose to take the curl down to the ends of the hair or stop a couple inches before the bottom. Make you way through the lowest section, then release the upper sections and curl by sections again.

When you’re done curling, finish it off with smoothing oil for the ultimate sleek and smooth look!

The finished look
