Choosing a wig: Ear tabs

Wigs come with or without ear tabs, but which ishould you choose? Here, we discuss what are ear tabs and who needs them. I intentionally used my lightest wigs to show you this so that you can better see what is my hair and what is the wig.

Ear tabs

Ear tabs are just what they sound like: a tab near the ear. They help provide structure and support as well as standing in for hair near the temples. They can be lined with velvet to improve comfort or silicone to reduce sliding. They often have a metal or plastic “stay” which is a thin stick of material that helps provide support And keep the area near the ears flat against your head. For all these reasons, most people will prefer to have ear tabs.

Best for: those with no bio hair to blend or bio hair that is very different from the wig hair, or those that prefer to have extra support

May get in the way for those with glasses. While I can wear my glasses just fine on the outside of my ear tabs, some people find it uncomfortable

No ear tabs

Here you can see that the side lifts up when I pull the hair back on this piece without ear tabs because it doesn’t have the same support to hold it down. If I had no bio hair I could have left more of the lace and glued it down, or if I had bio hair that matched the wig better I could have cut more lace and blended my bio hair.

Best for: those with no hair who want to glue the sides or those with closely matching bio hair (in color and length) that want to blend their hair

Note: For me, personally, the 2 wigs that I have had that did not have ear tabs required gluing along the forehead because they were loose, I’m guessing from lacking support on the sides. This may be just my head shape, but it’s something to consider if you are looking at a wig without ear tabs.

Note that I can still tuck my hair behind me ear, but I have to be more careful of the placement of the wig hair when I tuck my hair, asking sure that it’s not pulled too tight.
